fun facts of the day

On average, each person entering a pool or any swimming area leaves behind 1mg of fecal matter in the water. That may be little, but it adds up to a whole lot of poop when it gets crowded

Viruses and germs are transmitted in the droplets from when someone sneezes. There's a "cloud" that hangs over in a 3 feet radius from the sneezer. So large lecture halls are filled with these sneeze clouds - that's why I hate sitting next to people.....

OMG. it's cheesecake day and i'm not eating any! :(

later alligator!

cold summer days

coldest summer ever. i've never been so cold before - the winds, the need to always wear a sweater in the middle of July, etc...

My life is so hectic right now, but who's to blame? I planned it this way and, in an odd sense, I actually like everything going on right now. Finals are in two weeks and then I'm back in LA. Home sweet home. I've been helping one of my favorite professors teach her lab class - I'm the undergrad ta - and it's really fun to see all the underclassmen. They remind me of myself and how much I didn't really know about anything. They also do the weirdest crap that I never had the guts to do - like feed gum to the hydra or cut off half the earthworm. I've spent the last two weeks teaching about the sheep pluck (heart, lungs, trachea, liver, gall bladder), cutting up rats for dissection and the practice exam, cutting up worms, looking at leeches being fed, memorizing where the sea slugs and featherdusters are hiding in the marine tank. I also proctored a lab exam! SO COOL to be on the other side of the room calling time and making sure they don't cheat and then sorting their tests. Bubble in your ID numbers correctly! I can't believe people had trouble with that!

I also had to write my lab report and study for midterms while ta-ing so I was super stressed. I pulled an allnighter (OMG - I haven't done that in forever!) to write my report that I turned in a WEEK EARLY! (my ta pushed the deadline back a week) but I'm glad I don't have to deal with it anymore. I was becoming so nerdy. I read like a million papers on SNARE proteins to the point that I would recognize the author's name and be like "oooh that must be a good paper! i have to read that !" But I like the fact that I can read these papers and understand what's going on - it makes me know that my education was worth all the money and years of work.

And... because of all the information from all these science classes, I've developed a fear of marrying someone who is a carrier for some horrible disease or has a latent form of an STD. It's really sad to see babies born with a defect when a lot of it could've been prevented. Testing people! Genetic tests and blood tests! I've also developed a fondness for microbes - those critters are pretty cool - most of them are harmless. Also, Purell hand sanitizers say that they kill 99.99% of germs - but if you put that into an equation - it's about 10^2 germs. If you had 10^6 germs on your hands, you would still have 10^4 germs left. :) Also, you would want to kill pathogens and not the friendly normal flora that helps protect our body.

OMG. a summer of science. but this is what my life will end up revolving around, so I guess I should prepare for the grind of it now.

p.s. I don't like writing bibliographies - thank god for RefWorks.

p.s.s. I've lived in Berkeley for a long time when a homeless bum walking past me screams "you're walking alone. we should shove a 16 inch glass penis into you. hahaha" and it doesn't phase me at all. I've been screamed at some many times by some many crazy people.

p.s.s.s. miss you and good luck on finals! :)

hellmouth is where all the crazy people are

So, I was walking to the library (inside the science building). I was in front of the door and this creepy guy goes "hey, i have a question." he looks drugged out so i kept walking. then he was like"hey lovely". i was creeped out even more. but the guy was coming towards me so i guess there was no escape. so he asked a stupid question about outlets while staring at my chest. i hate the creepy people here. they make my skin crawl

Back to 2008

I was standing in line at a restaurant and I noticed something on the floor. I've been in this restaurant a million times before but I've never seen it. There was a time capsule buried. It was buried in 1995 and will be opened in 2045. That was so cool. Now I want to make a time capsule! Woot!

3rd post todayyyyyyyy

p.s. I was walking home and I saw that somebody had tagged FLP on a streetlamp. First thing in my mind was ... RFLP "Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism" - a change in DNA sequence that can be detected with restriction enzymes. I'm the biggest nerd ever.

p.s.s. I heard Jay-Z sing "wonderwall" at Glastonbury (which I really wanted to go to) and I thought he was the sexiest thing in the world........................ :)

Who's biased?

I read the BBC everyday. I really look for the news about Thailand because the politics over there is intense. The BBC paint the people I agree with as "aristocratic, royalist, traditionalist elite". That gives the connotation that these people are self-centered and caring just for their well-being and such. I feel that the correspondents don't really understand what is going on. How could they? They're usually British and live in Thailand for only a few years until they get a better post. They don't understand the culture and tradition and what has gone wrong. I don't think they truly understand what is at the heart of all this.
But this leads to the question of whether I'm the biased one. I don't think so because I look at the situation with my own perspective - what happens over there doesn't directly affect me over here. Politics gets me down so much. So much is wrong with the world. Leaders use words to gain power but never really own up to those words. I feel like a jaded old person....

Never Let Monkeys Eat Bananas

So, I had a reallllllly weird dream last night. [and it didn't involve Bradley] ...
It's one of those dreams where I've woken up and gone to class and everything and I'm still thinking about it - like it just happened. It was about this guy I know from middle school and still kind of keep in touch with. I dreamed that he came to visit and he had a little kid! [Bachelorette possibly influenced this] So we all went to look around Berkeley and the campus. I remember seeing the bay and the Campanile [giant clock tower] becoming a rollercoaster ride. We lost the kid somehow [apparently it was my fault]. And then there was a ceremony and we got shipped to Iraq as soldiers [this might be from a 60 minutes episode - I am such a nerd]. And you got arrested at a dance party for dancing weirdly... So, it was a MAJORLY weird dream that mixed people I know and miss and t.v. episodes....

Also, I hate crossing picket lines. I understand the worker's demands. The cost of living in the Bay Area is really high and with this economy, I don't think they're surviving very well. UC Regents please negotiate with them, I want tater tots! I can't live on anymore scones! [just kidding.... but seriously, I miss my tater tots]

And it's only 59 degrees and cold, no sun either -yay for summer in the bay where it's just like winter but we can wear shorts because we think it's summer.

I've ended the whole "word and word" title thing....

day and library

So yesterday, I went in search of the book I had to write a book report on at the undergraduate library. Although I realize that not all books are academic, it didn't hit me until I was looking through all the books on the shelves. In one day, I read three books - I was so excited to have fun reading. So these are the books I read:

1] perv - a love story : I must admit, the title really made me want to read it - it's very catchy. So the writer's pretty famous - he wrote a few episodes of CSI and stuff and this book is supposed to be somewhat of an underground cult classic. Well, I just thought it was really weird and mostly disturbing in a way that it doesn't really give any insight. It's just disturbing for the sake of disturbing.....

2] Glamorama: This is from the guy who wrote American Psycho, so it's gonna be a little disturbing. But the disturbing in this case has effect - it really satirizes society, especially American society. I liked this book because of the ending. I kept thinking throughout the book that the main character was so stupid and annoying - I really didn't like him; but, I guess that's the point. The ending makes up for everything though. We're alone in the end.... Also, I didn't like the fact that the writer has a tendency to list celebrities and pop culture references and sex acts - I know that it's for effect, to show the materialism in our society BUT REALLY, after 100 + pages, I get it already!

3] The Bridegroom: This is by a Chinese author and the writing reminds me of Gabriel Garcia Marquez - it's poignant and sheds life on other cultures around the world. It's a book of short stories and they're really well written. It's so human and I really feel for the characters after every story. Life can be super tough.

So, I was so amazed that I read all these books in one day, although I did stay up to 4 in the morning reading. I always know a book is good when it still stays with me after I've finished it. Like today, I feel like I'm still in a haze with Glamorama - like I just flew to New York and hung out with these people. Ahhh, books - my one true love, my first love.

Facebook and friends

I don't understand why people I've never talked to, don't want to talk to, or those who don't want to talk to me friend me on facebook. It's just getting ridiculous sometimes.

darkrooms and me

I hate it when professors dumb things down in lecture but then make their tests the hardest things ever!

I was in the darkroom yesterday to develop the X ray for my Western blot for my lab and I have just learned how much darkrooms freak me out. They're dark and they smell. When you turn off the lights, that eerie red glow like bugs the hell out of me. It makes me feel like I'm losing my eyesight. But, I do like labs though even though they can stress me out.

I had thought of other things I wanted to write about, but I've totally forgotten them.
OH!!!!! The other day, I was walking and these two people behind me were talking about horchatas and stuff. All of a sudden, the guy said "Half Salvadorean and half anything else is always a really good mix" I thought of you! :]
