day and library

So yesterday, I went in search of the book I had to write a book report on at the undergraduate library. Although I realize that not all books are academic, it didn't hit me until I was looking through all the books on the shelves. In one day, I read three books - I was so excited to have fun reading. So these are the books I read:

1] perv - a love story : I must admit, the title really made me want to read it - it's very catchy. So the writer's pretty famous - he wrote a few episodes of CSI and stuff and this book is supposed to be somewhat of an underground cult classic. Well, I just thought it was really weird and mostly disturbing in a way that it doesn't really give any insight. It's just disturbing for the sake of disturbing.....

2] Glamorama: This is from the guy who wrote American Psycho, so it's gonna be a little disturbing. But the disturbing in this case has effect - it really satirizes society, especially American society. I liked this book because of the ending. I kept thinking throughout the book that the main character was so stupid and annoying - I really didn't like him; but, I guess that's the point. The ending makes up for everything though. We're alone in the end.... Also, I didn't like the fact that the writer has a tendency to list celebrities and pop culture references and sex acts - I know that it's for effect, to show the materialism in our society BUT REALLY, after 100 + pages, I get it already!

3] The Bridegroom: This is by a Chinese author and the writing reminds me of Gabriel Garcia Marquez - it's poignant and sheds life on other cultures around the world. It's a book of short stories and they're really well written. It's so human and I really feel for the characters after every story. Life can be super tough.

So, I was so amazed that I read all these books in one day, although I did stay up to 4 in the morning reading. I always know a book is good when it still stays with me after I've finished it. Like today, I feel like I'm still in a haze with Glamorama - like I just flew to New York and hung out with these people. Ahhh, books - my one true love, my first love.
